Oregon’s recent wildfires have been devastating. I wanted to show that Mother Nature can renew with beauty emerging again from the destruction and that even the burned-out trees have their own haunting presence.

13 Daffodil Lane

46” x 31”

Techniques: hand appliqué, embroidery, free-motion quilting

Materials: commercial cottons, beads, buttons, pearl cotton thread, ribbon

Artist Statement:

I’m drawn to whimsical art and architecture, which led me to “build” this house. Several years ago, my husband and I were planning to buy a house. He had to be away for a month while we were looking, but his last words before he left on his trip were, “Don’t buy a yellow house.” Guess what color house turned out to be perfect for us (and that we purchased while he was away)? This quilt is named for my favorite number and for the street where my husband grew up.

30” x 18”

Techniques: hand appliqué, embroidery, free-motion quilting

Materials: commercial cottons, felted wools, buttons, ribbon, pearl cotton thread, Quilter’s Dream Orient batting

Artist Statement:

My design was inspired by photographs I took in Charleston, South Carolina, of a wonderful old twisty tree. I was the first of the five people in my group participating in the SAQA Central Oregon group’s Whisper Challenge for the 2020 Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show, so I had the freedom to design a quilt of my choice, as long as I used the same dimensions as the rest of the challenge entries.

Sea Song

25” x 25”

Techniques: hand appliqué, embroidery, free-motion quilting

Materials: commercial and hand-dyed cottons, silk, beads, buttons, rick-rack, ribbon trim, lace, yarn, decorative threads, Quilter’s Dream Orient batting

Artist Statement:

The challenge fabrics that inspired this quilt had peacocks on them, but I saw “eyes,” and my design evolved from there. Embellishments include beads, buttons, silk, painted lace, hand-dyed rickrack, an old coral necklace, shells, Razzle Dazzle thread, and yarn.

Beep, Beep!

33” x 36”

Techniques: Hand appliqué, machine quilting, painting

Materials: Commercial cottons, button, pearl cotton thread

Artist Statement:

This quilt was inspired by photos I took in New Mexico and Colorado. I wanted to capture the stunning landscapes in a quilt, but I wanted to add a roadrunner. Roadrunners usually show us drab colors so that they hide within their habitat, but they are such fascinating birds that I think they must have much more colorful inner lives. Following the example of Suzanne Marshall, who is incredibly good at finding textures in commercially printed fabrics to achieve the effects she desires, all the fabrics in my quilt are commercially printed cottons.
